Zero Contract hours are just that.... nothing. Surely a company would know when they need staff.
It's hard to defend the use of ZHCs by employers such as Sports Direct as they really should be able to manage their staffing with a combination of full time and part-time staff but you do get businesses where the work is very variable. Think of conference or or entertainment venues which will hold events of varying sizes throughout the year. A hotel will have to bring extra staff in when they have a big wedding.
Of course they could use employment agencies to get some temporary staff for the day but many venues prefer to have staff that they have used before rather than strangers sent by an agency.0 -

Yep, that's the exact situation I was in. I was on a ZHC for about 2 years and did a handful of events. They trained me to give tours of the facility (we needed specific safety training) and I also did some work from home and a whole 2 week stint in the office, all on the same contract. That's what ZHC are for.0 -

You can continue to claim job seekers/benefits if they are not giving you enough hours.
You may not get any money some weeks if you do earn enough.
As part of a zero hours is the legal right to turn down offers of work keeping under the hours is relatively easy.
You can also work anywhere else you want as exclusivity cannot be written into the contract.
Some believe it is easer to get a job if you have a job could make finding a better job quicker.0 -

I would say that is certainly true for most employers. They like to see that you are prepared to get stuck in and do something, anything, to earn a living and gain some workplace experience rather than waiting for the ideal job to come along.
ZHCs also allow you to have several jobs at the same time which between them hopefully add up to enough money and open up opportunities for something better - and permanent - in the future.0
