Range esimators

How reliable are car fuel range estimators? I've got a 2014 mazda 3 now and when I refuel the dash computer indicates an incredible number of miles as it's range. E.g. When I put in a tenners worth it says that it will give me around 120 to 130 miles. Of course I know that this is only an estimation as it can't know how I will be driving so is probably using the optimum driving conditions mpg to calculate the number of miles remaining so I don't take too much notice of it.

It also provides an instantaneous mpg reading which I think should be more accurate(but not 100% correct). Can I trust this reading with more than a pinch of salt?

It'll be based on average mpg so for similar drives will be fairly accurate.
I normally only use it when I'm down to the last bar of fuel so I don't get caught out.

It's never occurred to me to rely on one for my own car because I know how many miles I can get out of a tank.

I tried to rely on one with a Hybrid Rav 4 hire car once that said I had 160 miles left. 70 miles down the (straight) road when I was hovering on empty I decided never again.

It calculates the average based on your current average MPG which can go up and down. Not uncommon to see it give a silly figure if you've been fairly economical then drop like a stone as soon as you start to give it some beans. How accurate it is depends on the update frequency of the average MPG reading and how long ago it was since you reset the average MPG.

As I still live in the 1970s, I simply zero the A trip when I fill up, then fill up again when it gets near to 200 miles.
I can't mentally cope with paying much more than £30 for petrol just to go to work.

My woeful Nee-San has one of those com-poo-tahs but as it seems to think there are 1600 yards in a mile, and 5 litres in a gallon it is pretty useless.

A while ago, I got the yellow fuel light on, and the range was estimated to be 35 miles. As my journey was going to be less than that, I reckoned I would make it home and could fill up there. I set off driving like a granny. When I got home, the estimated range had gone up to 38 miles. Proving your point, I think.

I have the same car but the reserve in the tank is crazy. I've been on 0 range and got to a garage and only managed to get 45L into a 50 tank despite it being supposedly empty. Range does also vary based on your current driving style but once you have driven for a while you get used to it and how far you can get from the driving you do

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
