Volvo

Just had a work colleague and wife over for supper and they’re looking to buy a secondhand Volvo V40 with a budget <£10k

We were talking about the relative merits of buying from a) Volvo dealer b) car supermarket.

Anyone have any idea on what premium % the Volvo dealer would charge for the privilege over a car supermarket? Does the dealer have any tangible benefits?
Cheers.

The marque dealer will generally have a better quality vehicle what you might call A grade. The car supermarkets bulk buy the B grade stuff, higher miles, needed a few chips & scuffs tidying, that sort of thing.

The dealers know they are competing with supermarkets, and are not that much more expensive, personally I'd check the prices at a supermarket, and try and buy from the marque dealer as close as possible to that.

Remember the supermarkets often have hidden charges too that you can end up paying if you are not savy enough to refuse them. (e.g. trying to add on £100 for an HPI check that they have already done, and cost them about £2)

The supermarkets have a lot more cars, but you still end up walking up & down yourself trying to pick one, they never have a helpful list on their website.

I have bought from a supermarket, ( high miles, but that wasn't a problem, never noticed any touching up or damage repairs.)

I went there with this daft romantic idea that in the 21st century, with all these com-put-as that I could say what I was looking for and the salesman could give me some sort of summary print out- colour, miles location on the lot, but the reality is they don't seem to have a clue what they have got, and dismiss you to go round on foot to find out for yourself.
