Untaxed - when do you get fined?

My tax runs out tomorrow night 30th June. If I leave it until Friday 6th July to re-tax it, will I get fined?

Not if you declare it SORN - and keep it off the road until you re-tax it.
If you do nothing, or use it during the SORN period, then you are open to being fined.

Since you are going to renew next Friday, why not renew with a cc or od as the charges will be less than the penalty and it's not as if you are saving anything as you will be paying for the whole month.

Don't get paid until next Friday and everything is already maxed out.

Suggest you setup monthly direct debit then.
They take a week or more before they take the first payment, and it's a sixth of the 6-month tax taken each month - far easier to budget for.

It's not as if you didn't know it was a bill that was coming, will your works not give you an advance from your salary?

Yes I knew the tax due was coming, but it's been an expensive month. Paid out over £200 on MOT + new tyres + other bills and some debt repayment. Thought I'd still had plenty cash left but turns out I didn't. :(

I should have plenty surplus next month as haven't got much to pay out for this time. Just got to cut down the nights out. :(
  • My OH didn't receive the usual tax renewal letter, 2 or 3 weeks after the tax ran out she received a warning letter. So you might be OK for a week over, but no guarantee on that one... BTW, she didn't incur a penalty charge, or fine, for late payment.

As already mentioned, if you are paying by direct debit the first payment is not taken immediately because they need to set it up with the bank. For example, I taxed my car from the 22nd of May and the first payment was taken on 12-Jun. DVLA will tell you when the first payment will be.

I would imagine that you're unlikely to have much of an issue from DVLA with a late renewal, but potentially more likely to get a fine if you use the car on the road and get picked up by ANPR as driving an untaxed vehicle.
