Credit card dispute

It's a long story so I'll give you the shortened relevant bits.
I recently had a dipsute with my credit card company. I noticed an unauthorised transaction for £700 from a company that I had previously made a payment to. They had retained my card details without my knowledge and took this money several months after I had dealt with them. My credit card company were very good, sent out the forms and I have since had the money credited. I thought that was the end of it. It is now some time later and the company who wrongly made the initial transaction have done the exact same thing again ie they have taken £700 from the card details that they had still retained from several months before. I'm just persuing another dispute claim.

Where do I stand? Should the credit card company have authorised this payment when it was quite obviously the exact same amount from the exact same company with which I had just had a dispute? They told me they are legally obliged to make a payment if a company requests it. Is this correct?
And can you tell me if the company that have taken the money have done something unlawful?

I have now cancelled my card and requested a new one (if only I had done that before). The CAB couldn't give me much guidance.

Any help will be very gratefully received thank you!

  • Yeah, I had a similar situation arise with a regular payment arrangement that I'd cancelled, and was told by my credit card company that if payment was requested, they had to oblige. The only way to stop it was to cancel the card and get a replacement with a different number.

Thankfully the company that had taken the money refunded me before I had to do this and I had no further problems.
