Windows Xp problem connecting to Internet.

Options
I have just bought an Asus Netbook to help me transfer all of my pictures, kept on a memory stick, across to Google drive.
I appreciate its only running Windows Xp but as it's main use is for the above use, I thought it would be fine.
I have set the Netbook up and have connected it to my WiFi, which is Virgin Media.
It's showing as connected with excellent signal ( 54 Mbps) but when I try to get onto the Internet it has the " Unable to connect to the Internet" message.

Would anybody have any ideas as to why it's not connecting to the Internet?

Could it be firewall blocking?

I have cancelled my WiFi connection and re-installed it but still get the same result.

Thanks:money:n

Possibly. Are you using any third-party firewall software? If not, you could try temporarily disabling the built-in firewall.

If you are running Service Pack 2 (SP2), you'll be using the Windows Firewall. Anything earlier, and you'll have the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF).
To enable or disable the ICF or the Windows Firewall:
    1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel, or Settings and then Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Network Connections, and in the resulting window, right-click Local Area Connection. In the menu that appears, select Properties. Note: If you connect using VPN or dial-up, right-click the appropriate connection icon instead of Local Area Connection.
    3. Click the Advanced tab.
      1. If you have the ICF, under "Internet Connection Firewall", check Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet to enable the firewall. To disable the firewall, uncheck this option. Click OK.
      2. If you have the Windows Firewall, under "Windows Firewall", click Settings..., and select On (recommended) to enable the firewall. To disable the firewall, select Off (not recommended). If you want to suspend any exceptions you've made, check Don't allow exceptions. Click OK

It sounds like it's connected to the router, but not the internet. Do you have the internet working on other devices? If so, can you open up a command prompt, run the following command, and post the output? (It would help to see your local network settings):
    ipconfig /all

You could also try the following commands to test DNS/internet connectivity to see whether you get a "timeout" response.
    ping google.com

    ping 8.8.8.8

    My thoughts are

    Gateway IP address
    DNS IP addresses.

XP comes with Internet Explorer 6 out of the box. This is now totally useless for getting to the default MSN page never mind anything else. You need to upgrade to IE8 and then you should get somewhere.

You should be able to get to Google, just about, to get to the IE8 page, but do it from Start -> Run, not by launching the browser first.

A couple of things to try if you haven't updated IE or tried other Browsers; https://ccm.net/forum/affich-9657-can-t-connect-to-internet

Worst case scenario is to just run a clean install of Windows XP.

Were there any values? If there were and were obtained from the router, could he ping 8.8.8.8?

A stab without knowing the results: For basic XP. In the Open field, type netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt and then click OK.

Note: If you are using Windows XP SP2, type netsh winsock reset all and then click OK.

    then restart the device

If you are running Windows XP SP2 that has not been fully patched, then the WPA2 patch may not have been installed already (KB893357).

Or, just install XP SP3 if feasible, as this has the update already included.

If it is already SP3, then it is not a WPA2 issue, so follow the advice previously given.

A link to the SP2 hotfix is here... Not from the Microsoft site as they seem to have removed all traces of this patch :(http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp2/WindowsXP-KB893357-v2-x86-ENU.exe

If you're using the PC close to the router, just get an ethernet cable and plug the two together.

You don't HAVE to use WiFi
