Must I have a Smart Meter - OVO Energy

Just received the below via email from OVO.
Can we refuse the meter change, at least until SMETS2 is rolled out? Or can they insist on fitting one?
And the email doesn't seem to tell us if they're talking about electricity or gas or both?
Thanks,
"Would you believe it? Due to the age of your energy meter, its certification is soon to expire. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy requires us (by law) to recertify it, so we're going to give you a completely new one.

The great news is that you can now get a free smart meter upgrade, which means a shiny new meter to replace the old one.

You’ll need your account number (nnnnnnn) and postcode. Then just login and book a date and time that suits you."

Yes you can refuse, however, if they are using that tactic, then you will need to have a new meter.

You can refuse a smart meter, and they will probably install a smart meter that does not send any information to OVO.

Meters don't last forever, so if it is deemed for replacement, you must allow a replacement.
If you have questions over the email, refer to the author for clarification.
It would certainly be unlikely that both meters require replacement at the same time.

However, if you elect for the upgrade to smart metering, they will change both meters.

You do not need to accept the offer of an upgrade to a smart meter, not today, not for a SMET1, SMET2 or even when SMET3 arrives.

Have a read of the MSE smart meter article for more information

    As it says:
Do I have to get smart meters?
No. Whether you get one now, in the future or not at all is up to you.
All suppliers will eventually be required to offer you one, but smart meters are NOT mandatory - you're free to say no. You can always change your mind if you decide you want one at a later date, simply contact your supplier and ask.
