getting rid of fleas with no pets in house

I have seen fleas in the house
We do not have any pets but do have a visiting cat who has not been in our house for ages. I think the fleas may have hatched from last year when cat visited more often and brought them in.
How do I get rid of them with no animals in the house? Last year I treated visiting cat and that solved the issue. I could do this again but its a bit unfair on the cat as he is not ours and has chosen not to visit our house this year (I would have to bring him here and keep him in - not something I really want to do).
Will the house spray alone be enough and how long does it take for them to go with no treated animal around to kill them.
Help - to make matters worse, this year I seem to be allergic to them (getting bitten) we have had fleas before but this is the first time they have effected me. I need them gone quick.
Thanks

I have found fogging very effective.
But you have to stay put the areas you fog. Also dont leave the smoke alarm accessible at the time.
Spray is easier to get under skirting etc for additional cover0 -
You might also want to buy a cheap flea collar and put in it your hoover bag. Stops anything you've hoovered up from hatching in future. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
House spray everything and hoover like mad. Wash all the bedding/curtains etc on as high a temp as possible. Respray the whole house and hoover every nook and cranny again after 2-3 weeks. Should be sorted then.0
