Hi all,
I am expecting my first child in July. I would like to change my surname to my late mother's maiden name. Is there a best way to do this? I have looked only but it all seems very confusing as there seems various ways.
Many thanks

You can use any name you want, without any paperwork, as long as it's not for nefarious reasons.
However, assuming that you will also use this name for your baby (congratulations!) then it may be wise to change your name officially by Deed Poll. Most solicitors will be able to arrange this for you.0 -
Thank you. Is there a way to do this for free online by deed poll? Many thanks0

There you go - don't know if you have to pay anything to register it, though - haven't read all the way through it.0 -
You can do a deed poll, or a change of name deed. You will then need to notify everyone (banks, DVLA, tax office etc) to change their records.
You can give the baby whatever name you want, it doesn't have to be the same as yours, so there is nothing to stop you registering the baby with your mum's maiden name even if you don't get around to changing your own name until later.
The only real benefit of registering your deed poll is that you don't have to re-do it if you lose your original deed! All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0
