Gas meter for existing supply

I'm working on a renovation project at weekends and a couple of weeks ago I received a letter from Cadent asking me to arrange an appointment to let them check the incoming gas supply due to the period of time that had elapsed since the previous owner had the gas meter removed. As the property is 90 minutes drive away from where I currently live I had to take a day off work to meet the engineer who turned up, looked at the pipe, said it was ok and that it would be logged as such for the next three months when, if there was still no meter fitted, it would need to be inspected again.
To avoid further inspections and days off work I think it might be better for me to get a meter fitted, although there will be no requirement for a gas supply for another several months so I'd be looking to get a tariff that has a low standing charge in the short term because that's all that I'll be paying for.
I've read that British Gas and Scottish Power can fit new gas meters but wondered if all gas suppliers did this as some of the smaller companies seem to have lower standing charges, and which companies might be worth approaching to get the meter put in.
