Is this living room too long and narrow

Me and GF have put an offer in on a house. It's brilliant in every way other than the living room which is long and narrow.
The dimensions are:
19.4 x 9.9 feet
5.89 x 2.97 metres
I think I'm probably over thinking it. Particularly as im massively upgrading from a 2 bedroom flat to a 4 bedroom detached house with garden and conservatory!

Living room has two windows - one is a nice big bay window. There's also a fireplace

I suspect they've knocked through two smaller rooms. Open plan kitchen diners etc like that wasn't a thing when that fireplace and those doors were put in.
If you moved the doorway nearer to the middle of the room you can put a full wall of furniture along that wall next to the doorway and have a different impression of a larger room when you walk in as you will look left and right instead of down what might feel like a corridor when viewed from one end.
It's a teeny bit skinny for a lounge but a lot longer. Just concentrate on feeling lucky about the length:rotfl:
I genuinely think that moving the door will help a lot.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I don't think it has been knocked through actually. I may be wrong but with the fireplace there and just the look of the inside and hallway it doesn't look like it has.
One idea I had - similar to you mentioning was:
Put a new wall up and make the bit with the normal window and smal home office. Then I free up a bedroom upstairs and also gain a wall and a better shaped/proportioned living room.Amo L'Italia0 -
Sounds like a plan!
Inhad typed exactly what you just said but removed it, for some reason. Went for the lesser option. I would do that - it will be much more useful.
(We did do it. Our lounge felt a bit long and I do actually value having a space for paperwork etc. We've lost nothing in terms of furniture from the lounge, judt gained more space for furniture in the new room).Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

if you are going to be into Big TV UHD/HDR then there are not a lot of options.
Are you likely to become kitchen/conservatory/garden dwellers most of the year then as suggested splitting the room to create an office and a more compact TV/snug room would work.0 -
Getting ahead of myself, but I think what I will do is put in a wall to split the room into two, like 70% for living room area and 30% for a study.
Red line to show the wall
Blue box to show where a door would go
Add the wall where this red line is:

I need to confirm but I don't believe that the fireplace is a genuine log burning one. There isn't enough room for a full chimney breast so hopefully it's just a case of taking it outAmo L'Italia0 -
You're right, chimney breast doesn't look real. If the floor plan is correct, it doesn't take up the space it should.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Get rid of the fire place and block it up and have your sofas on the wall facing the window.0

id split the room too. People on the settee closest to the camera have no chance of seeing the tv and they are too far apart. There would be no social interaction between people on the settees as the space in between is too large.
If the room is split the fireplace would have to go because it would no longer be in the middle of the wall. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
