I have a serious health problem and cannot work anymore, and I have to downsize my housing asap, I am single and 46, I need to know how roughly how much housing benefit will pay before I go looking for properties to rent, is there a general average figure I can base my calculations on ?

If you are thinking of renting privately then it will be LHA and that is dependent on area

Do you know if you live in a Unversal Credit area? If you do, then you will be claiming it as opposed to Housing Benefit0 -
Check if your area is a full Universal credit are by putting your postcode in here.

I don't think I'm eligible for any other benefits as I get a war pension.
I spoke to one council area I was thinking of moving to and they said I'd get up to £180 per week, this sounds a lot for a single person , does this sound right ?0 -

It's twice as much as where I live but it is going to be dependent on the area.
Put the authority in the top link I quoted and see what comes out.
Otherwise, the information is usually on council websites
For example this is Havering (not where I live)

As you have a serious health condition you could consider claiming PIP which is not means tested

It really does depends where you are - it's closer to £90 where I am, some London boroughs will be more.
Try this.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
A war pension, unlike ordinary pensions, can be tax free and may be disregarded when assessing certain means tested benefits. It's complicated, but the people to ask are the experts. The Royal British Legion.I don't think I'm eligible for any other benefits as I get a war pension.

All Council's disregard War Pensions as income when assessing Housing Benefit claims.

Complicated answer, I live on a boat that I own, but the rent is for the mooring place.0
