Moved house and old supplier wants fees paying for a service I can't continue

Morning All,
I have moved from Somerset where I had Green Network Energy supply both my electricity & gas.
I recently moved to Cornwall where my new house only has electricity (which had a prepay meter as property used to be a rental), but no gas as the heating is via heating oil as no mains gas in village.
I was still in my contract with GNE at the time of moving, but thought as the electricity meter was prepay that couldn't have been transferred, although it now turns out GNE can be your supplier got the prepay.
Basically they want to charge me an exit fee of £25 per fuel for leaving, even though it's because I've sold the property!
Is this a legally allowable fee?
I can sort of accept the electricity, even though I had a nightmare getting a key work with the EDF meter & had no power for the first few days and am just happy I have power now.
But can they charge me an exit fee for the gas side of things as there is no way I could have continued with them as my new property doesn't have gas????
Cheers and any advice gratefully received
Rick

Yes, they can charge you the £25 exit fee.
By moving you have cancelled the contract before it ends so they are entitled to charge a cancellation fee.
First Utility are another who charge cancellation fees when moving mid contract.0 -
Only the ones you need to avoid, charge you an exit fee if you move house.0

When you move house you don't transfer your existing contract from the old to the new.
On leaving you ring the supplier and give them a meter reading, They then either bill you for anything you owe or credit you. The new owner reads the meter and rings Green Energy and is in a Deemed contract (and is then free to switch)
Similarly when you move into your new house you ring the present supplier and get a new prepay key or card in your name.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Cheers everyone, thought that was the case, but wanted to check before accepting it.
Robin, I took photos of the meter readings the day I moved out and rung GNE with them.
Just had an email this morning with my final bill & I'm £84.37 in credit, so with the duel fuel penalties, they'll still be giving me money back, so at least I've not got to stump up another £50 to close the account!
