in Credit cards
i applied for a capital one card on 10th june. i was approved and everything was ok. my card was sent out and started using it no problem.
i received a call from someone at capital one who said my account was being reviewed again for potential application fraud. i denied any such knowledge and said i'd get a call back tomorrow.
got a call 3 days later to question me about my employment status. i gave them information about where i worked and how much i earned. they said the info i put on the application (my work and yearly income) "doesn't match the data held by the credit bureaus".
i offered to send them my payslips and a stamped letter. they said no and that my account would be closed in 30 days. i had that time to clear my balance. they said i didn't qualify for 56 days interest-free anymore as its a "goodwill gesture" and so instantly charged me the interest up-to the day and 28 days ahead. they said no more interest will be charged because the balance has to be gone by 30 days or they would refer me to a collections agency.
i've now cleared the balance and the lady said to keep it dormant until it closes automatically. is there anything i can do in this situation? can i appeal their decision or report it to the financial ombudsman? i spoke to someone at callcredit who said they don't even store info about people's employment. and i didn't get a chance to prove my income.
any advice would be much appreciated

If they thought the card was being used fraudulently they would close it immediately not tell you to wait for it to go dormant and close under those circumstances.
Have you contacted C1 directly to discuss this with them?0 -

it wasn't card fraud. it was alleged application fraud (lying on the application form to obtain the card). they said i basically lied about being employed and my income when i've got payslips and letters to prove otherwise.0 -

This is absolute nonsense. The 56 days interest free period is NOT a goodwill gesture.
Also they cannot charge interest 28 days in advance and make you pay interest for the next 28 days when you have already repaid the balance.
It is very difficult to believe that the call was genuine as just about everything about it feels wrong.
Regarding your employment status and income. Have you recently changed your job? Has your income significantly increased recently? Does the information provided to Capital One correspond to the information provided in your last credit application? Has your income increased significantly since your last credit application? Is your income paid into a current account with a UK bank?
Can you also confirm that this is a UK issued card and that it was Capital One in the UK that you spoke with.0 -
In addition to the three well known credit reference agencies, there is another agency - National Hunter - that records some of the details you've put on application forms in the past. They would highlight any application where your stated income differs significantly from previous applications.0

That's interesting. I have just retired so my income is going to be less than it was before. Is the system intelligent to know that there has been a decrease in income inline with a change of occupation i.e. now stating retired on an application form?0 -
Generally, yes.
It's more geared to picking up that last month you were working in McDonalds and now you're a heart surgeon, or you've miraculously had a 300% pay rise in the same job.0 -

After dealing with Capital one several times and believe me the utter tripe they tell you is staggering...ive had complaints regards Credit report and they have sent a full and final response regards PPI after a full and thorough investigation.
Another time about them falsely showing arrears on my account...again this end ed with a full and final response about a credit card id closed months before and in no way related to the complaint...obviously with numerous emails in between correcting them which were ignored.
Never know such a incompetent company..and they lend money...now thats scary.0
