UPS Nightmare

I sold a roof rack on Gumtree which was collection only. The purchaser said he would pay for a courier. UPS turned up. The driver asked me for the paperwork. I told him I did not arrange pick up so I had no paperwork. He went to his van and asked me to sign a document which proved he had picked up the parcel. He did not give me a copy of the paperwork. Five weeks later I had an invoice for £28.87 from UPS. Apparently the piece of paper I signed opened an account and made me responsible for delivery. I was conned. When I got in touch with the purchaser he told me he used My Parcel Delivery which he paid for in advance. They farmed it out to UPS. I have given UPS the reference and item numbers from MPD. They say these numbers are not on their system. Lots of phone calls and emails. I have got no where. They are not helpful and have washed their hands of me. Help.

Well if they want their money, they'll have to chase you for it so won't be able to wash their hands.

Send them something in writing (even email, just something you can produce a copy of later down the line if needed) stating that you never entered into a contract with them and they need to take it up with their contractor.

If they maintain you did enter a contract with them and you are a consumer, the consumer contract (information, cancellation & additional charges) regulations 2013 should help but cross that bridge when you come to it. Until then, maintain there is no contract.

If they send a letter before action, then you need to treat it seriously.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
