Should I water my dying lawn?

Just a minor point possibly worth making. If you are thinking of watering your lawn when the grass is already turning brown, you run the risk of aiding the germination of weed seeds.
Grass that has turned brown due to drought let's more light through to the soil, adding water will make a perfect environment for weeds to grow.0 -
Promise you, it will grow back. Full refund if I'm wrong!
Depending on how long it is dry for - no it won't
I live on sandy soil and have lived here for decades and if I don't water it then yes in places - lots of places it dies and never comes back and has to be scarified out, and re-seeded.0 -
My neighbour has been watering his lawn which of course despite wasting gallons of water every day, still looks brown. He'll be the first to complain when they introduce hosepipe bans. He thinks it's his God-given right to have the only green lawn in the neighbourhood.
A couple of downpours when we get the storms which inevitably follow heatwaves, and everybody around will have green lawns too.0 -
Then there will be complaints about having to mow the lawns too often.:rotfl::rotfl:I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

If we have any lawns left! I’m starting to get nervous. Mine is now crispy and yellow.
Dafty, I really hope you’re right!0 -
The anonymous me is ALWAYS right, there's an edit button up there on my post
Thing is, water it once, and you'll have to water it right through the summer, and that will be costly, and soon have you arrested and sentenced to four years for breaching a hosepipe ban (,edit button at the ready).
I have a garden, but I also have fields. They are dry and crisp. They were dry, crisp and dead in 1976, but they grew back ... as will yours.
If it doesnt, a fiver for grass seed is all you will need, if you have a large lawn. You won't waste a valuable water resource, and you won't worry about picking up the soap in the shower.
I know it's dry... It's a drought... not something the UK is used to, really. Chin up, and use the water in a long, stiff drink!0 -
I'm looking forward to rain, up to 3 hours a day watering is getting boring. At least I don't have any lawns to worry about.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

No hosepipe bans down here in the SW; reservoirs still over 80% full.:D
Mind you, I think we pay more than anyone else, and Devon was the wettest county in March of this year.0 -
I water my vegetables and flowers by hand, and I keep my bird bath topped up but there is no way I'd water a lawn. I'd rather the local stream still had some water in it.0

Will it come back soon? Or does that mean autumn?
I’ve also just read an article about drought and it says ‘All foot traffic on the lawn must cease immediately’. It sounds like a military order, so I’m guessing it’s important. It just seems like what’s the point of having a garden if I can’t use it when the weather is hot and sunny. I can’t even put laundry out on the line then either!
We have 3 dogs on ours every day plus us using it, sitting out on it and going to the washing line, shed, etc, and it always comes back green within a few days of rain returning. Tough stuff!0
