Well, after getting all my ducks in a row, getting my spreadsheet sorted and starting to get plans in place for our extension, last night our bathroom began to leek.
I'm sure i mentioned before, the bathroom is original to the house, which i think is 1980. Literally nothing has been changed so it's pretty
The bathroom was next on our list after the kitchen/ extension so i was hoping it'd keep going for another couple of years.
But last night, when the kids were in the shower, water started dripping in the hall and outside the front door. The only saving grace is that when the shower was turned off, the dripping eventually stopped.
However, the place that it's leaking outside is through/ by the lintel over the front door and it's slightly discoloured (rust coloured) so we're worried that the longer we leave it, it could be doing structural damage to the house
So, my husband is planning on ripping up the old tiled floor tonight, taking the bath panel off and seeing what the damage is. Hoping it's not too bad but now I'm thinking the bathroom might need to skip the other work which will set us back financially a bit. My husband can do some of the work but we'll want to do it properly to save us doing it again in a few years.
Basically, my mind is fried and i just want to know what's going on so i can make some plans.
Phew! Sorry for the rant!Sealed Pot Challenge 075

Fingers crossed he can do a patch up job for the time being. We had a leaky shower and didn't realise until it started dripping through the lounge ceiling. Hubby managed to patch it up and all was good or so we thought. A couple of years later we ripped our bathroom out and the floor was rotting. The reason I'm telling you this is although there was a leak and a rotten floor it did last a couple of years and if we'd not decided to do the bathroom would probably still be there. xx0

Thanks for the bathroom well-wishes everyone!
Husband pulled up the bathroom lino and underneath that was a selection of 'beautiful' powder blue tiles circa 1980. Pulled a couple of them up and the floor is not looking too healthy - damp wood. And when he took the bath panel off, there was a lot more damp wood and the joist isn't looking too clever either.
He's going to take a proper look again tonight then we'll have a chat about what to do for the best. I suppose it'll be a case of weighing up the cost of how to fix it up to get another year or two out of it against just biting the bullet and doing it properly now.
It's second on the list after the extension/ kitchen works, so maybe it just has to come first and we push back the bigger work a bit. We'll talk tonight and make a plan.Sealed Pot Challenge 075

Morning all! No major decisions on the bathroom front after last night - to be honest, our heads are spinning because we're so busy at the moment so it was a light conversation.
1. We both agreed that something needs to be done sooner rather than later with the bathroom to prevent any further damage.
2. We don't want to go all out, spending thousands to get the 'dream' bathroom that we may have had, if it had lasted until it's turn on the priority list. However, i don't think it's worthwhile to do the bare minimum either since everything is on its last legs.
3. We agreed that the best way forward is to rip out the full bathroom, replace the ceiling and floor (both definitely required), reinstate the walls if necessary and put a simple bathroom suite and some wall panels in to make a clean, functional bathroom at a reasonable cost. Before we commit, I'm going to price it up and see if we can fit it into the budget while not affecting our building plans too much.
I'll feel a lot better if we can get this done and still proceed with the plans for the building works. The bathroom is the one area that is pretty essential and could go at any time - probably the oldest 'feature' in the house - so I do want it functional. It'll also be nice to have it done so that it actually looks and feels clean! A 39-year-old bathroom just doesn't look clean no matter how much you scrub.Sealed Pot Challenge 075

Morning HG
I think if you've got to do any work in the bathroom then getting the building part of it done properly at this stage is a good idea. After that, go for the best suite and accessories you can get within your budget. It's a room that has to work hard so as much as I'd love mine to be the sort you see in magazines we've always plumped for practicality especially with having DC's.
We put wall panels in hubby's Dad's house and I'd definitely have them in mine if we do ours again. I'm all for making life easier these days. In fact after spending an hour on my creaky knees painting skirting boards I'm looking at plastic ones for the future. Not everybody's cup of tea but the thought of never having to paint one again is really appealing.
Have a lovely day. xx0 -
Haven't done a single survey for weeks and weeks...
Logged onto PA and have £4.50 cleared and completed a £1.25 survey before breakfast. Must remember to check these more regularly and make some time for these things. Next on the agenda after i do some work will be to check Onepoll!Sealed Pot Challenge 075

Yes, my desire for practicality and easy-clean is high! Given the fact we have two boys who are already into sports, i think it's a good move.
Glossing the skirtings and door frames is one of my least favourite jobs, but replacing them is SO far down the to-do list, as you can imagine :rotfl:Sealed Pot Challenge 075
