Looks like your work colleague who booked the hotel should have told you about the check-in conditions. One to perhaps make them aware of for the future.

Also an idea to look at the hotel site in advance for useful information such as car parking arrangements, directions from airport and of course reception times.

The hotel would have had you down as a no-show but of course at liberty to charge you for that night.

Thank you to everyone who replied.

It does sound as if it's the person who booked it that is at fault - for one even if everything had been on time I still wouldn't have arrived until after 22:00...

Think I'll be making my own arrangements in future!

    Thanks again guys

I'd be careful how you approach this - they genuinely may not have known

.......... Should I at some point have called ahead?

    Thanks guys.

Yes, it's common sense and courtesy.
In this particular case if given enough notice I would expect them to have arranged to stay open late for you.

@gettingtheresometime - It's pretty clear they didn't know but seeing as they booked the flights which (if on time) wouldn't have landed until 21:40 I would've expected them to know... They'll have booked with this hotel for years.

@mgdavid - I've never knowingly stayed at a hotel where the reception closes. Calling ahead now seems obvious but at what point should I have considered that? Time gets away from you in these situations and you're more interested in getting there rather than considering the possibility you'll be unwillingingly homeless for the night.

How long was the flight delayed on departure? If an hour or more I would have phoned from the departure lounge, after all you're stuck there so may as well use the time usefully.
I've stayed on many hotels for business which lock the doors at night - sounds like your employer spoils you, stay with them!
