I have heard all sorts of scary things about washer/dryers, admittedly on Watchdog in the last century. Given the OP's options, I think I would take your advice, BrassicWoman.0 -

Solar panels, guilt free tumble drying. I would still do it without them and did so. OMG, aforementioned TD has moved four times, bless it. The only thing older than it is the beer fridge; my very first fridge and ten years older than the TD; it has moved seven times, eek! On the other hand, our third DW is all of two weeks old...0 -
If the landlord has told you he's happy for you to install a washing machine, then a washer dryer is no more risky, and solves several problems.
I have an Indesit washer dryer in my little flat as there wasn't room for separate appliances, and apart from having to have two of the knobs replaced it has served me well for about eight years now.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Towels will never get dried properly and other clothes come out soaking wet.
I have a normal condenser dryer it’s B rated around £350 but to be fair I still don’t have massive electricity bills (around £20 a month) and I do 3/4 loads a week.
WE have a Grundig HP one and none of those problems, I suspect people are just using them wrong(or bought a rubbish one).
For low number of cycle uses the cost benefit/payback should be analysed.
The savings on a A++ over a cheaper A+ will not be much if not doing many dries a year.
Annual cost on the data sheets are based on 160 cycles(full and partial loads) over 3 a week.
A decent 8kg HP uses less than 2kwh for a full load with have a max load of under 1kw
A standard 8kg condenser/vented will be using around 4.5kwh-5kwh with a max load closer to 3kw(they have a heater)
Condenser efficiency, aim for A(90%+) rating or the high end of the B(80%-90%) rating.
There are no hybrid HP A+++ rated dryers which have a heater as well.
Grundig have got the annual consumption down to 177kwh from their standard A+ HP of around 260kwh
single full loads under 1.5kw.
They also are quicker than standard HP as they can use the heater to get the air up to temp quicker.0
