I'm trying to find out the type (and maximum amount) of RAM, to go in a HP Compaq D330ut tower system.
When I select "HP Compaq" on the Crucial website, under "Select product line", I can't find "D330ut"
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Juts type d330 and select the series.
Seems to be 4gb.
Would not buy it from them though, I'd expect to get it free for any computer of that age
I probably have piles of the stuff sitting around, not sure about the 2gb sticks though. I should stop hoarding junk!0 -
They have a memory scanning tool on the Crucial website so just use that. It'll figure out what is already in and given you a list of upgrades. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I've got a dead PC, from which I could probably scavenge some RAM modules.
Update: Just took a look inside, and there are four sticks installed, so each stick will be half a gig.
I believe the dead machine has 6 gig, and, on examination, there are two sticks.
Will the Compaq run with 6 gig, and only recognise 4 gig, or will it not run at all?
EDIT: The dead machine has two sticks of 4 gig each.
EDIT AGAIN: The memory sticks are different.0 -
If it was running a 32 bit os then it will only recognise 4Gb (slightly less in reality)0

But will it run with more than 4Gb in?0 -
No. It will only support 4Gb

As the PC is somewhat of an antique now, it may be more difficult to buy larger capacity sticks of RAM unless you have found some?! What you are after from what I understand for this PC model is DDR1 RAM (PC3200), this PC3200 means a clock speed of 400Mhz. You may search Amazon, eBay or Dr Memory for some results if you have no luck - https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=4gb+ddr1
What you will find is 1GB RAM is worthless, however sticks of 2GB or more are valuable as they are the only ones left in demand for people running legacy hardware (this could be some shop POS systems for example). The only reason the smaller sticks of RAM (e.g. <1GB) are deemed worthless is because if your PC only has 1 or 2 RAM slots then you would then only be able to install 1-2GB max.
The question on everyone lips though.....why not treat yourself to some new hardware?0 -
This is incorrect. The OP is asking whether their PC will be able to run if more than 4GB is inserted and the answer is yes. If you put more than 4GB in it then the PC will only be able to address (recognise) 4GB of it (4GB minus memory usage of the graphics card I believe).
If you had actually looked at the spec that I posted the link for you will find that it WILL NOT run with greater than 4GB in because the memory that it will take is128, 256, 512-MB or 1-GB DDR-Synch DRAM PC2700, and PC3200 (single channel and dual channel configurations)
DDR1 is limited to a max of 1GB per stick. If op has 2 & 4 GB sticks then they are most probably DDR2.0 -

Two reasons.
1. I got it for practically nothing.
2. My grandfather was Scottish.0 -
I've got some old RAM at home I can chuck in the post.
I believe it's DDR but only 1GB sticks (from memory).
I'll have a look later and update.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
