Absolutely. You need to play them at their own game somehow. Both methods work. I tend to cut it too fine on arrival at airports to be able to properly argue the toss though so I prefer to toss my keys in the general direction of the employee and go.
The company I work for obviously has good insurance too! The repair costs we often get through tend to be high but there is also inconsistency there. I recently absolutely mullered the left hand alloys on a BMW 4 series when a bus driver decided not to stop on a narrow section of road near my house. Never heard to peep from the rental company......0
