Smoking in Italy....

We're off to the Italian lakes at the end of next month and just wondered how the Italians are about smoking in restaurants/bars etc? I'm not a smoker-basher by any means, but I've had a few meals made less than enjoyable by other people's smoke and just wondered if anyone had any experience of this?

Edit; things are looking better ,it seems a ban on smoking in public places came into effect on 10/01/05 http://www.epha.org/a/1630
Ps as a side issue 27% of italians smoke"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page."

Having just come back from Padova (near Venice) I can confirm that no bars or restaurants allow smoking except for outside on the terrace (if they have one).
Quite annoying for me but great for non-smokers.0
