Debt collectors at door re: Old car insurance

So I had debt collectors come by when I was at work today, regarding my old policy with Diamond car insurance.

Around the time my insurance was due to run out a received emails from Diamond telling me it was almost up and that if I didn’t contact them my policy would end, no mention of any fee.
I decided to switch insurance provider so didn’t contact them. I’m now being asked to pay for cancelling my policy - which I did not do.

Am I right? Or do I have to pay this?

If you allowed it to auto renew then you may have a battle on your hands; what did the policy documents say?

Sounds to me like it auto-renewed, in which case as Zorillo says you will probably have to pay the cancellation fee.

Are you sure the email said if you dont contact them then your policy will end ?

I also agree with previous posters in that it sounds like it auto renewed.

You are able to make an Official Complaint to the Insurer, they are duty bound to properly investigate it and reply

If they genuinely told you that if you do nothing they will not renew the policy, then make sure you explain this in the complaint.

It's unusual for the first contact regarding a debt being a doorstep visit by a collector.

Have you had anything in writing quoting a reference number? Write back and ask them to explain why they say you owe the figure they are quoting.

Not really debt collectors in true sense. They are field agents working on a commission for a debt buyer (debt collection agency). Diamond sold your debt on and the field agent is simply trying to gain money for the company that bought the debt.

Suggest you check your credit record to see if any entry has been made. Once you have done that, then make a formal complaint to Diamond. If the debt has been recorded on your credit file, then that will be part of the complaint.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
