  • Virgin Trains used to have a contolling interest in Trainline - strange thing is that the last time I used Virgin trains to London and used their site not Trainline I was not charged the extra for using a credit card!

Try CrossCountryTrains. Exactly the same fares as The TrainLine but no booking fees or card fees:-

I think they have a fee to pick up from a ticket machine

I'm not sure if it would have helped you but I book my train tickets with East Coast Trains (sorry i cant post link). They offer you the option to print out your own tickets from home as a PDF(print@home option). I had a similar issue because i didn't have a local station with the ticket machine.

CrossCountry do print at home e-tickets free if charge; but now charge £1 for collect at station. However this is only for their own services, if your journey, or part if, it is on a train where e-ticketing is not available, the collect at station option is free.

Working on the railway i'd advise checking prices online then buying over the counter, in advance at the station.

a few months ago, i had a nightmare with them

I bought some tickets to edinburgh from them, but about 4 days later, had my credit card cloned (not blaming them, I used my card at a few potential places of weakness that week) Anyway, i rang them, asking if my ticket could be changed, so I could collect it

no problem they said, they would set it up to be collected from the station in person from a ticket office - and gave me a reference number. said it would be available within 1 hour

went the next day - no reference anyway

    rang that night

"don't worry, i can see what she did wrong" and, i was given another reference number, again to collect the next day

next day, again, nothing - thankfully it was the same women on the ticket office, who remembered me, and she sorted it out for me!
