Best course of action after car written off ahead of European road trip

Dear Fellow Members

I am after some advice.

I was planning a road trip to Eurodisney with my 4 year old in August from the 20th to the 23rd and the plan was to drive there. I booked the Eurotunnel crossing, the park tickets and accommodation on Airbnb.

This week, my car has packed up and the mechanic says my best option is to scrap it. I can’t really afford to buy a new car at the moment and am now wondering what the best course of action is for my trip.

The Eurotunnel booking is non-refundable but amendable. The park tickets are none refundable. I have got travel insurance but don't know if I would be covered in this instance.

Should I rent a car for the 4-day trip? Should I just book tickets on the Eurostar and hire a car in France? Should I try to sell my Eurotunnel booking?

I don’t want to cancel the trip but don’t want to now have to fork out lots of money.

Can anyone advise, please?

Thank you

IMO you have already thought of the simplest solution to rent a car in the UK. Check with the rental agency that you can use the car in France and what the breakdown cover is.

Do you have a friend or relative who would lend you their car for four days? It might be cheaper if you were to pay for them to get around on public transport or use taxis.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

If (as your user name suggests) you're in London you should be able to hire a car for a week for less than a £100.

Cheapest location will probably be Gatwick.
  • Thank you all. I think I will either rent or borrow.

Just make sure you can take a hire car out of the country, many of the cheaper ones you won't be able to and you have to tell them that you intend to and you'll need extra insurance. It could work out quite expensive.

I would just book Eurostar instead, especially if you're in London.
