Ignore Christmas decs and fairy lights in the fire - this was last year!
I'm scared of this fire and want to replace it. At the moment I have to turn a gas pipe on at the wall and then remove the grate thingy, and light it with a match to operate it. And it smells gassy.
What do I replace it with? I don't want to touch the original parts of the fireplace. Do I need to have one made to fit?
I don't know where to start looking.

Thanks misty ... can you ask Bri, are they a standard size?
I'm rubbish at this.
Also, if anyone can help ... I have another fireplace ...
This one is a real fire but a few months ago a whole brick fell down the chimney!!! I'd better not light it then?
... and my central heating is very cool-I think I'm going to be very cold this winterde do-do-do, de dar-dar-dar0 -

AB do you dislike the fire or are you just scared to use it? (if the latter getting it serviced would give you piece of mind for a fraction of the cost of a new fire).
as for fire place number two, would a chimney sweep be able to advise? (never had a 'real' fire so never needed to know these things)

I don't think it's safe
I will try a chimnrey sweep - several small children live nearby
DD3 says to tell you that she made the one on the left.
My OH bought me the one in the middle - there are three balls in a cage to represent the children we would havede do-do-do, de dar-dar-dar0 -

was that a self-fulfilling prophecy or did you work extra hard to make it happen?
why not have a local in the local rag for corgi registered gas engineers. should imagine most would do free quotations for any work required, which should give you an indication whether just a service is required, or something more extensive (in which case it may turn out cheaper to get a new fire anyway).
do you have a carbon monoxide detector? or are you more concerned about the amount of gas that is released?know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -

I have that same little china Christmas tree, it was made for me in Canada and brought back by my BIL many years ago :j
I have a living flame gas fire, tray with sand and authentic looking coals, and often get rubbish and half bricks coming down the chimney, you've just reminded me that I should get the chimney swept this year!0 -

My MIL bought us the tree years ago
Edi - do you think our houses are falling down?de do-do-do, de dar-dar-dar0 -
Funnily enough I decided on the gas fire rather than a real fire to save the mess of dealing with coal and cleaning it out. Now I have to periodically take all the coals off and clean them carefully to get rid of all the dust and dirt that the rain brings down
If you brush the coals too vigorously the black colouring comes off and they are white underneath so I had to buy a spray to colour them black again.
and yes, probably0
