Resident in England.
Only child hoping to study Medicine at Queen's University Belfast.
Full loan being made for tuition fees of £9250.
Maintenance loan of £3224 but were expecting £4054 or thereabouts. Friends and others whose household income is more than us (in some cases at lot more) are getting loans of at least £4000.
Rang Student Finance who simply say that the figure is correct and that we must have an income greater that the others we know or know of.
The government Student Finance site does not let you see the details entered in support of the application so cannot check if my wife or I have made an error. Certain that we didn't.
Has anyone else encountered this and resolved it or can offer a way forward?

How do you know what the income is of these people you know? Not something people generally divulge.

The £3,224 amount is the "living at home" rate which menas your child would have marked on their application form that they are living with parents for all three terms.
If they are living elsewhere (halls/flat share etc.) they will need to contact SFE on 0300 100 0607 and ask how they change that.

I work at a University advising students around student loans so I know that this is correct.
  • It turns out that the wrong box was ticked - at home rather than away, so 'Change of circumstances' paper form is being sent out.

    Thanks.
  • We don't know their exact incomes but it is not difficult to work out an approximate figure when you know what their jobs and hours are.

Anyway, problem sorted - see response below.
