There's no way to buy your own insurance if you have a UPS label supplied by Apple.
OP, ignore the comments suggesting you should have sorted your own insurance - this isn't your problem, as you've used the label provided to you.

I would investigate with UPS - see if they have check weighed the item at any point during the transit process. This would help prove your case.

Unfortunately it is the OP problem because they now have to deal with the stressful situation of getting Apple to change their mind or going through the steps in the helpful link provided by mije1983 on post #15

Having insurance or not or even being allowed to have insurance is irrelevant now for this issue but its damn well important to know in the future that you know exactly where you stand when sending items back to any company
    • OP needs to carefully read that link on post #15 before deciding the next course of action.
    • Make sure you have written correspondences explaining to you why they have rejected your claim that they're responsible for the phone being lost.
    • Make sure that any paperwork that was given to you before sending the phone back did not state that your responsible for for insuring phone in transit. If you did not receive any written information to that effect then I would challenge them in writing to explain why this was not clearly stated to you before you decided to ship the phone back under their terms and conditions.
    • Sometimes having a trail of paperwork brings clarity to a situation or helps focus people who otherwise can't be arsed doing a good job. Phone calls or online chats can be good at resolving issues quickly to both parties satisfaction but things in writing take on a whole new level of importance in my opinion.

I have personal experience of Apple being a shocking company when it comes to trying to get them to respond to complaints or acknowledge any slightly "inclement weather" on Planet Apple.

Chances are they won't respond at all to a LBA and will hope you will just go away.
Chances are they won't attend court when you issue proceedings and you will win by default.
Chances are they won't pay when you get your CCJ.
Chances are they won't pay when you escalate to high court.
Chances are it will make a good episode on Can't Pay We'll Take it Away when the debt is now £2500 and the old chap with the wig rocks up to Apple HQ and threatens to take the aspidistra in reception.

Just use a more professional enforcement company!
