Help needed to run an old game I have on disc.
The game ‘Machinarium’ is on disc and I loaded and played it on my old laptop which I think was windows 7 or 8 with no problems, ‘no longer have that laptop’.
I now have windows 10 on newish laptop and I can’t get it to load although I have read it should run ok on vista/windows 7/8/10.
The strange thing is, it will play the music sound track!
Despite knowing little about the workings of my laptop I can see lots of possible settings linked to my CD/DVD drive.
My laptop is an Acer and the DVD player is listed as slim type DVD A DA8A6SH if that helps!
In simple terms, do you think I need to change something within these settings to get the disc to load/run? As I would love to play this game again.
I have no problems playing music cd’s and DVD films.
Thanks for any advice please keep it simple.

I choose the rooms that I live in with care,
The windows are small and the walls almost bare,
There's only one bed and there's only one prayer;
I listen all night for your step on the stair.

9 year old game....
Do you have a shortcut on the desktop or in the start menu to run it? If so then right click on that shortcut and click properteis. Go to the Compatibility tab and either use the Compatibility Troubleshooter or under compatibility mode select Windows 7. Apply then OK.
Hopefully that'll do it.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Tarambor thanks for your help.
but what do I do if I don't have a short cut on desktop?
I have looked at other 'short cuts' and understand what you are saying but I do not appear to have one for the DVD player.I choose the rooms that I live in with care,

He means the game shortcut, not the DVD drive.0 -
If you're desperate to play the game its available on steam and other sites for a few pounds0

Sorry for my ignorance but I don’t have a short cut for the game either.
The game has never been played on this laptop and when I put disc in to drive, it tries to load and then just stopsI choose the rooms that I live in with care,

Open Windows Explorer
Open the DVD folder (you might need to right click and select Explore)
Find the setup file (possibly setup.exe)
Right click on it and follow the previous Compatibility instructions0 -

Thanks for your comments, I have seen it on steam but am unfamiliar with the website being of an older age group.
Am I correct in saying I need to open an account with steam then I can purchase and download games?
Second question, I have seen this game and others for sale on e bay, sellers are offering to sell a !!!8216;key!!!8217; to download the game from steam for a cheaper price.
Should I avoid this option are they just a scam.

You should avoid the option to buy a key on ebay. Just open an account on Steam and buy and download the game. It is also available on Gog which has a lot of old games to buy and download.0

"Am I correct in saying I need to open an account with steam then I can purchase and download games?"
Yes that is correct, plenty of good games {both free and to buy}and not a scam site.
I have been using it for years and {like yourself }am part of the older generation.0 -

If it's one of the infamous Mamba misprints it might look something like this:
