Smart Meters - switching provider

Good morning,


We are currently in the process of moving house and the current owners are with British Gas and have smart meters fitted.


We are with E.on and may decide to stay with them when we move.


I know there were initially issues in terms of not being able to retain the full functionality of smart meters if you switched providers.


I just wondered does anyone know if this is still the case or does it vary for different suppliers? If so, has anyone successfully switched from British Gas to E.on or other suppliers without losing any smart meter functionality?

You'd need to discuss this with the new supplier you want to use - they will (should!) know whether or not the smart meter fitted in the property will continue to operate when you switch.

The 1st gen Landis and Gyr British Gas smart meters can!!!8217;t be connected to by any other supplier I!!!8217;m afraid (although I!!!8217;m guessing it!!!8217;s fine with Sainsbury!!!8217;s Energy as that!!!8217;s Bgas too).

So they!!!8217;ll become dumb meters if you switch to Eon.

Eon use !!!8216;Secure!!!8217; smart meters, which a few other suppliers use e.g OVO, First Utility, Octopus & Bristol Energy - so if you to one of those suppliers afterwards your meter may be able to retain its smart functionality.
