    What's the deal?

Simple really; Virgin is offering a free PAYG sim card with £5 free credit.

    How to get your sim

Just go to the Virgin site and enter your details and you should get your sim within 2 weeks.

To start using your free sim card, put it into any unlocked handset. For info on how to unlock your handset read Mobile Unlocking: Unlock The Savings.

    Get an extra £2 credit

Thanks to YPaymoree for spotting this. If you set up to Virgin's online account service you'll get an extra £2 airtime on top of the £5 that comes with the sim card plus two free downloads (either a ringtone, pic or game). You can use the online service to check your balance, see your latest calls or top up online. If you don't use it you'll still get your £2 though.

    Standard call costs

Click here to see Virgin's standard call costs. Do remember that just because the Sim is free, if you keep using it after the first £5 you'll be paying and it isn't necessarily cheapest. To check out the best deal for you, read the Mobile Cost Cutting article.

Do we need to be worried about registering the IMEI number of the phone? Does it give Virgin any control over locking the 'phone to their network? Why would they want to know the number? I think they can block the phone use if it is stolen. ....I don't understand - Can anyone explain? or am I just being paraniod?

    Thanks

It`s optional, so you can always leave the field blank.

No Virgin don't lock the phone to their Network by any means at all, if you provide the IMEI it does if your phone is stolen give any of the network providers not just Virgin the facility to blacklist the phones use if you report it as stolen. You can use the sim card in your phone without having to register it with them it's your choice.

I wouldn't say you we're paranoid, you just needed some further information to be a little clearer

Do the unlocking services mentioned on this site include the 3 network locked phones?
Generally 3network are difficult if not impossible to unlock. However-its the "phone" that needs the unlocking so it depends which make/model it is. ive had 2 phones unlocked on here.

  • This offer still seems to be available - or at least my request was just accepted.
