Garage Issue

Good Afternoon Guys,
My friend has bit of an issue with a local garage. He put in his Vauxhall Corsa as the clutch had gone, he asked for someone to take a look and get back to him with a quote.
He has just had a call from the garage advising they have fixed it for £460. The car isn't worth that, so he would never have paid that amount anyway.
Where does he stand legally? Is there anything he can do?
Thanks

Sounds like there was a misunderstanding over 'look at it' and 'fix it'.
I don't see why anyone needed to 'look at it' as any garage should be able to quote a clutch replacement over the phone.
Price sounds about right to me. What were you expecting?0 -

Stupid way of looking at it. It is almost always better to repair than replace even if the repairs are worth more than the car. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If he very clearly said "I don't authorise any work to be done until you provide me with a quote" then he should not have to pay for the work. However, the garage are within their rights to remove the clutch they have fitted and return the car to your friend as he delivered it to them. (If they have disposed of the old clutch by the time he gets back to them, the situation becomes more difficult still)
Under the circumstances, I think the best option is to try to negotiate a discount on the labour as a way of closing the issue with the least hassle. It would be worth your friend discussing, with the owner of the garage, how this mistake occurred and who made the mistake so that it doesn't happen again. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0 -
How would they take a look at the clutch except by stripping the gearbox off?
Surely its worth more now with a new clutch?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
He spoke with the garage last night who were very good with the situation. Realised they had acted with no say so, and have reduced the fee to £200.0

Sounds like they should go on your "trusted local garage" list
