You are right but it is only most dealers who will remove or reduce their cash discount quote when you mention scrappage.
However some are prepared to add the VW £4,000 scrappage to their discount.
In my case it happened that the dealer who offered the best cash discount was also one of those who would then add the £4,000 on top.

Are you 100% sure they didn't just build this into the haggling? Would be interested to know what you bought and what the deal was.

It was a Skoda Superb I eventually bought.
I obtained about 10 cash quotes in all, 5 from Carwow, plus other internet brokers and local dealers not captured by the first two.
I did not mention scrappage when obtaining any of the cash quotes.
The highest cash discount was 16%, about £4,000, then another £4,000 scrappage was added on top.

I took advantage of Audi's Diesel Scrappage Scheme back in March and had my car delivered a couple of weeks ago. I ordered a new Black Edition A4 Avant (factory ordered cash purchase) which had a list price of £39k and my local Audi dealer offered me £6k for my 13 year old diesel banger (also an A4) under the scrappage scheme.. With the £6k off on top of the regular discounts I ended up paying £28k, getting almost 30% off the list price which was way too good to be turned down. By comparison, drive the deal offered me the same car for £34k, they didn't participate in the Audi Scrappage Scheme. So yes, the scrappage scheme deals can turn out to be very good.

you would be mad to pay £20k odd upfront with no car to show for it.

If only like there was incentive to do it, like say, saving £4,000?

A friend of mine got himself a MINI 1499GT for £12,995 OTR by getting £2k discount from the dealer and then a further £2,000 discount via BMW from the scrappage scheme.

It was very much through BMW for the extra £2K
