Moov now tracker - Amazon, returns & rights

Options
Now firstly, if i've no right to return or refund then i've no right to return & that's that. I'm just here trying to find out if i can go anywhere with this.

28th May i bought from Amazon a Moov Now tracker purely for use when swimming.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Moov-Multi-Sport-Replaceable-Waterproof-Lightweight/dp/B0143V9DDQ

I'd read positive things about them as a swimming tracker & upon first use i was happy. It appeared to track everything. I threw in a random backstroke lap which i don't usually do and it noticed it. It tracked the few 'fast' laps i did where i tried to set a personal record for 1 length of a 25mtr pool. All appeared well.

Same again on the second use for the most part, although i had a feeling that on the fast laps i was quicker than what it said i was. I just thought maybe it was in my head & i was fatigued and not as quick as i thought.

Third time i used it and i was almost positive that it didn't record any of the quick laps i'd done. Either that or i had suddenly become a lot slower.

So today i tried again and there was no way i'd be unsure by the end of it.

So i fired off 12 laps freestyle and took a few minutes rest.
I tried to fire off 12 laps breast stroke although i lost count (had a feeling i had so it was no surprise when the result came in) and ended up doing 14. All good so far.

I then took a few minutes rest and made a point of immediately following this with a 'fast lap'. I waited for the seconds hand on the pool clock to hit 12 & then i went for it. By the time i get to the end the seconds hand is about 3 so i knew i was somewhere around the 14/15/16 second marker for my lap.

Off i go back down the pool doing breast stroke slowly.

When the results came in it says i followed my 12 & 14 laps with 2 slow laps of breast stroke - no mention of a fast freestyle lap at all.

My penultimate lap of the workout was another fast freestyle lap and again it failed to register this.

It also says that in amongst all this i did a butterfly lap ... i don't do butterfly.

So as time goes on i'm more & more unhappy with it as it's missing out a key reason as to why i bought it.

It's about to be 3 weeks since i placed the order. Will i have any chance of returning this as faulty? I know these things aren't 100% precise but i didn't think they'd be so bad either.

If you know how (in)accurate GPS is, then it's quite obvious that it won't really work if you swim the same 25m lane back and forth.

On the other hand, if you run a longer distance then it won't really matter whether the GPS thinks you ran 5000m or 5005m.

Unfortunately i can't make the pool length any longer than it is :)

If it records each length of my 12 lengths that i start off with then it should surely record the 1 fast length i did immediately after and then went in to a slow breaststroke.

Anyway i've contacted the seller so hopefully i'll get a refund.

I had a feeling before i bought it that these kinds of trackers wouldn't yet be up to the job & that it'd still be early days, but the reviews i read were positive which persuaded me to buy one of the cheaper trackers rather than shell out £200+.

Am i right in saying this device has no GPS? uses the GPS built into your phone?

Did you have your phone on you when swimming?

No GPS and no phone how will it know how far your swimming?

With swim trackers like this and even Apple Watch you need to tell it how long the pool is. GPS just isn't going to work.

It works out the length, pace, style by the movement of the gyro and may learn things.

I had to reset the swim data for my Apple Watch when I had the watch measuring and then decided to play with the kids. It played havoc with what it thought was happening ... :p

Have you tried resetting it first or clearing the "swim"\learnt data?
  • With the Moov Now (and there are guides on Google and videos on YouTube to show this) you don't need the phone with you. Obviously you're not going to stick your iPhone in your shorts and then jump in the pool and start swimming.
You open the app on the phone, connect the device via bluetooth, select your workout (so in this case it'd be a swimming workout), go and do your thing (you can leave your phone in your locker) and then when you get back you press on the phone to end workout which then syncs the data there & then and records everything to your history/app.

You can go in settings (which i did before i used the device) and set the pool length and also the measurement. I assume it's an American thing as the default was 25 yards so i changed this to 25 metres as that's what my pool is.
