Ebay account hacked! Large amounts involved.

My eBay account has been hacked. I can’t get logged on, seems like my password has been changed and I’ve got emails from PayPal stating that a large amount of money has been paid into my account (almost £1200!)

I don’t have my own PayPal account, I use my husbands account. We’ve checked and there doesn’t seem to be anything untoward showing in there yet.

I have requested a password reset from eBay, what should I do now? Am panicking a bit, my card details are on eBay!

Go through to ebay by phone and get your account frozen.

Thank you. Called eBay last night, my account is now under restriction. (No problem, I’m not a prolific ebayer and I never sell)

I called PayPal, apparently I do have a PayPal account which I opened over 12 years ago, and which has never been used, apart from this fraudulent transaction in the last couple of days. My account is now frozen and no-one can take out the payment, which will eventually be returned to the buyer. The money was on hold, I presume because it’s a large amount? And obviously, reporting to eBay triggered an alert?

Not sure how I got hacked in the first place, my eBay password is very obscure. Scammer is quite clever, I have over 100 feedback, so I don’t look like a newbie who has just signed up to sell an expensive item.

Hopefully, this will be the end of it and the poor buyer will get his cash back...

If they have your ebay and paypal then your email might be compromised, it is not uncommon for people to leave email insecure and forget that so many passwords etc can be changed via it.

I would change your email password and then do a deep clean of your PC, ask for help on the techie board and they will talk you through it.

There's also various companies that have been hacked. As far as I can tell the hackers have had bots trying to log in on other accounts with the same log in details.

It's not always from a phishing email. I had a problem from a Domino's Pizza account but they got nothing more than an old address and an expired debit card.

I was hacked on Saturday! Only a relatively small amount was taken, and the 0345 number on the ebay site was very helpful. I would recommend ringing that number as soon as you notice anything wrong

The problem seems to be getting beyond a joke now. Ebay not doing enough to deal with it. Several popping up every minute.

Here's a few, that appear to be blatantly hacked accounts:

    Sony Cybershot W830 £10.35 sold by jd_xx

    SONY Cyber-shot DSCW810B £10.33 sold by d.a.l.o

Anyone else considering deleting their account? I've been thinking about it, its not worth the hassle for what I use it for

The scam / problems I am getting at the mment is Nigerian scammers but based in London buying items and pressuring for refunds and keep the item. It's not even the Nigerian scam at all, just happen to have Nigerian surnames. They often just bombard you with spurious irate complaints, both threaten and actually leave bad feedback and then move on to threatening you with Karma and curses, all in the hopes to get a refund. If you ask them to open a return request they will often do so with a random tracking number which doesn't work and then continue the tirade.
