Close Santander account

Hi all. Apologies in advance for the long post. I will be closing my Santander account soon as I am living abroad and no longer need it.
As I am living abroad since April 2017 it is somewhat difficult for me to return the ATM card etc in branch. I know you can fax details of account closure to Santander and this is why I'm writing this post. When faxing details of account closure to Santander you must state your present address abroad.
I was wondering why would Santander want to know my present address?! Will they contact me at my present address to confirm closure of account via post or is there more to it? As well, is there a fee regarding account closure? It's a basic bank account.
Thank you.

I imagine they will wish to confirm the closure in writing, but also it's not unreasonable for them to want to be able to find you in the event that anything requires follow-up activity after account closure (delayed transactions, communications from other banks or merchants, or whatever), and in fact you're obliged under their Ts & Cs to keep your contact details up to date anyway:
There isn't a fee to close the account....21.3 You must ensure that the contact details you provide are accurate. It is therefore important that you notify us of any name, address, email or mobile phone number changes.0 -
Thank you for your post. I can now see why they would want to confirm via post confirmation of closure of account.0
