Car Selling Tip
Do not get fined!
If you sell a car and send off the V5C/3
it does not end there!
If you do not get a confirmation slip from DVLA
YOU HAVE TO CHASE IT UP.
If you do not then you can be prosecuted.
This is mentioned in section 12 but I doubt most people
take any notice.
We were just prosecuted for a case from 9 years ago.
I'm not even sure DVLA send acknowledgements back then!
But we still had to pay a small fine.
(If you get one of these retrospective letters asking for
£250, but you think you posted the document in good time,
then do not pay the £250 - phone them up and say you
posted it but forgot to chase the confirmation, if that is what
happened. Hopefully the court will decide to knock the fine down)
I JUST DON'T WANT ANY ONE ELSE TO HAVE UNNECESSARY STRESS

Then that's their own fault and any resulting situation is one entirely of their own making.
This should be on the "Praise, Vents and Warnings" board.0 -
I just do it online. I haven't sent one off in about 2 years.0

No
No you don't
The DVLA have form for losing mail and trying to blame the seller. Magistrates know this and if you tell them you sent it off they will believe you.
It's not a legal requirement to chase DVLA0 -

Far easier to chase it up after a few weeks and avoid having to explain anything to the magistrates!
(Also have a look at conviction rates at Mags court, you can't just say Not guilty and expect to be let off)0 -

If you don't receive a confirmation slip you phone them up because they've either not received it or received it and lost it. So whilst yes they do lose stuff in the post, you'd lose a case in court if you said you didn't do what they told you to do and follow up if you don't get confirmation. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. BS
It happens all the time and Magistrates are used to them.0 -
Well our magistrates were not of that opinion.
They questioned if we had chased up the DVLA
when we did not get confirmation.0 -

As a magistrate for 10 years I don't remember ever coming across this scenario, let alone get used to it.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0
