Three CS asked for my full debit card details? Should I be worried?

Hi. I just took out a contract with Three over the phone and the guy on the other end asked for the full 16-digit number, expiration date and CVC.
I know I'm probably just being daft, but why would he need all that for a contract? Is not like I'm buying anything. I already gave him the sort code and account number, to set up the Direct Debit
(Sorry if this is off-topic - I couldn't find a debit card section)

Perhaps they are going to take the first payment from your card as DDs can take from a few days to a few weeks to set up.0

It's likely it was used for ID verification purposes.
For example, if they get a pre-auth with AVS (Address Verification System) turned on then it means your name and address match what you've given them.0 -
To verify your ID.
When I took out my contract in store they took £1 from my card and refund £1 coin immediately. Though thereafter they input my card details again into computer. I don't know what that was for0
