I nearly lost out on buying a nice little netbook today. Briefly, a fake bidder won the auction but the seller agreed to relist it as a buy-it-now at my maximum bid (same as second highest bid but I can't be sure that was mine - long story).
I'd been in touch with the seller beforehand and was gutted when I thought I'd lost the auction. Thanks to alykatz's link, I was able to quickly explain to the seller what had happened. I'm reluctant to post this because the timing sounds so incredible and it was very tricky to accomplish but it's true (got messages to prove it). The cat and the cream :-).

I now know for sure that, but for the fake bid, I would have won the auction for £9.95 less.
