Are these untaxed vehicle fines my problem?
So last summer by boss at the time gifted me a car so I could get to and from work a little easier, with the condition that I wouldn’t get the v5 until I had worked another 30 weeks, so I couldn’t accept the car and do a runner which is fair enough. I had insured it but didn’t bother with tax as I thought it wouldn’t be my problem til after I had sent the v5 off. Now both myself and the previous owner have an untaxed vehicle fine each relating to a different date, but both before the date I sent the v5. Who’s problem is this? Not too car savvy yet this is my first vehicle ha

Could be both of you responsible.
One as the registered keeper and one as the person who uses the vehicle.0 -
Legally? Your boss, as RK at the time, is responsible for his vehicle being used untaxed.
Morally? You're responsible.0 -
It depends what is being claimed -
The Registered Keeper can commit the offence - s.31A, Vehicles Excise & Registration Act 1994.
and
The person using or keeping the vehicle can commit the offence - s.29 of the same act.0 -
Well you can't even tax the vehicle without the number on the v5. So id have thought it fair enough the boss dealt with it with it all being in his name.
Why have two people got a fine though?0 -

If you were using the vehicle on the date of the alleged offence, and it was untaxed, it's your problem. Pay the fine.
If you weren't using it, or it was taxed, then you go to coyrt and plead not guilty.
The other guy has a problem of his own.0 -

Because both have committed an offence. One was keeping an unlicensed vehicle, the other was using it.0
