Awkward neighbour stopping us getting a phoneline

  • Many buyers might be put off by having services for other people running across the land..... and, as he says, if a viewer comes and there's a man with a builder's bum digging a trench ... it won't look good.

Gas/water/electricity probably have "special permission" to do what they like as those are essential services. Telephones are just "lovely to have and important, but houses don't need them to operate as dwellings", which is why they're crossing t's and dotting i's.

Actually, in this day and age, I would have thought a working phoneline counts as a necessity in exactly the same light as fuel and water.

Admitted a lot of people use mobile phones, etc, etc these days instead BUT a lot of people have a landline phone and ditto a lot of people have their Internet coming down their phoneline.

I doubt anyone could get away with blocking off someone's access to phone and Internet these days - as they now count as necessities.

According to the OR guy, the problem is that it is an unadopted road and they must get consent from the road owner. Now the owner is lost in the mist of time.............

I downloaded a document from the House of Commons Library dealing with unadopted roads and it said that public utilities have the absolute right to dig up unadopted or private roads if needed and the "road managers" cannot stop them. They can try to arrange a mutually acceptable date, but cannot refuse permission.

    .

So - OP needs to go to someone "higher" than the local OP reach jobsworths, quote this document, quote there is no known owner anyway and get the someone "higher" to kick their backside.
  • Wondering what the outcome of this has been?

    Any updates?

Since earlier posts in this thread I know that, very coincidentally, my phoneline has finally reached normal standard at last (ie stopped cutting out my Internet at intervals) since an awkward neighbour has left. It might be coincidental.....as this is the sort of area where they might have personally known OpenReach engineers and been telling them not to "worry themselves too much" about my phoneline:cool:

On the other hand - I've had an Internet supplier (same one all along since moving here) that finally said something to B.T. and an engineer from there rang me (first time ever) and told me "When the Plusnet engineers turn up this time - you are entitled to ask them for their names and numbers. Do so". That meant they were personally accountable - and, funnily enough, the job was done properly at last:cool::cool::cool:

    *************

So, if the problem isn't yet resolved, then it might be an idea to "start from the other end" and get a suitable phone/Internet provider and keep ringing them with complaints that you can't use your phoneline yet for either phone or broadband. With that - maybe someone somewhere in your provider will give OpenReach such a kick up the backside that they will deal with and "fix your phoneline" (ie put it in in the first place).

Plusnet don't have any engineers. All work on the local loop is carried out by BT OR, regardless of supplier.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Mistype - I meant OpenReach engineers the 2nd time I typed it, as well as the first time:o
  • If he continues to refuse would he have to declare this as a neighbour dispute on his sellers pack?
OP I think you have the answer right here.
