Hot water not coming through on shower: what to do?

Hi all!

So recently myself and my girlfriend have moved into our new flat. It's an apartment where you don't pay for water or the heating of the water, as the building has its own boiler which serves the entire block. Payment for this is part of a service charge I pay quarterly.

Recently, the issue has got worse. A few weeks back, the water heating was fine. Not perfect, but bearable, but now i'm there waiting for 10 minutes (probably more if I waited longer) and no hot water comes out. What is interesting though is that the kitchen sink tap, the bathroom sink tap and most of the time the bath tap are all fine, with hot water coming out of all of them on demand with few issues. The shower head and hose themselves definitely need replacing, as water seeps out of the hose at quite a rate when the shower is on - but I'm not sure if that's the route of the problem at hand. There's limescale on the shower head but not enough really to cause this much of a problem.

What do people think? Do I need to call a plumber, or is there any DIY I could do? Is it the mixer valve that needs sorting out?

Many thanks in advance :)

It sounds like the mixer valve has gone bad. Most mixers have a wax thermostatic element in them, that tries to maintain the temperature you have set. If this has failed, it might be letting very little hot water through.

I repaired my shower that had this problem myself. You just need to shut the hot and cold water off to the mixer, and take the mixer to bits. In my case it was fairly easy to see how this was done. I was able to buy a replacement thermostatic element from https://www.showerdoc.com/

The most difficult part of the job is identifying the particular model of shower you have...
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

You can replace the hose & handset yourself for less than £20, see if this solves the issue, it prob won't but by the sounds of it they need replacing anyway so you aren't wasting money
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Could it be a shower cartridge?
