We dont use our chimney at home, and see a lot of birds/jackdaws spend a lot of their time up there. Im going up to remove the huge aerial thats there as we dont use it, can i buy a blanking cap to cover it off (the top of the flue?) looks like terracotta type material) to prevent any birds falling down into it? And are they a standard size please? Its a 1930's semi detatched

Yes you can cover it to prevent birds etc. but you need to allow ventilation. Google "chimney cowl" and you should find one to suit your needsSome people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!0

Thanks Kiran, think ive found what I need, but wasnt sure if i can just climb up and plonk it on, nothing else i need to do first?
Also, any idea if theres a 'standard' size diameter? Seen one for 280mm, the other for 350mm, but i only have the ladders for a day so it'll be a struggle going up measuring, then ordering online and the ladders will be gone back before it arrives . Wasnt sure if theres a common size used in certain decades of construction0 -
If your pots are anything like mine, it will be an 8" hole, and around 170-280mm outside diameter. I had a couple of pots capped last year, and they are held in place by oversized jubilee clips.
If you are in any doubt, order both sizes on the proviso that the unused ones can be returned.
Oh, and please, do be careful when climbing around on a roof. It is a long way down should you slip. Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -

You don't need to do anything before you cap it off other than clear any existing debris. You can get adjustable cowls

These will take care of the variance in sizeSome people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!0 -
I had a jackdaw suddenly appear out of the fireplace in front of me - quite a traumatic experience!! Moreover my Partner has a phobia about birds. Not an easy task but opened a ventilator window gently held him/her and lifted up and out - flew away.
Roofer, came along later and fitted chimney cowls. They have a metal band that is tightened to fit the chimney pot.I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -
I'm thinking of capping our unused ones when we have our roof redone. I'll be going for a terracotta/clay type - others will rust and need replacing after a few years, unless they are stainless steel.
Something like this:
