Young driver doesn't want to go through insurance for an accident?

As previously posted.
Although you do need to inform your insurer your best route is to claim off the guilty party insurer thereby not having to pay any excess and having to reclaim it, getting a replacement car and using your choice of repairer.0 -
OK, I have decided to go through the insurance as advised. I feel for him, I really do, but now that the shock has worn off, and thanks to the advice on here , I see things more clearly. My car is substantially damaged, the repair costs are probably way out of his budget. Also, as people have said on here, this may not be the first time this has happened. Going through the insurance is the the right thing, to protect myself and others. He did not give me his insurance details at the scene, only his name and address and mobile number. I also have his registration number so I guess my insurance will be able to to trace his quite easily?0

Yes it is a shame for the young driver, but he was obviously not concentrating and is extremely lucky it was your car he hit and not someone crossing the road.0 -
Hi,
Assuming the other driver does not wish to pay for repairs; you have 3 options.
1. Claim through your own insurance; check if you will be charged any policy excess, and, if your car is old, if they will supply a courtesy car if yours is not worth repairing- you don't say how old it is. Most insurers wont supply a courtesy car, if yours is a total loss.
2. Claim directly off the other insurer. If they do offer to sort things out; ask them to confirm ( in writing, by email) that they accept liability, will supply a courtesy car, and arrange & pay for repairs. If they wont confirm this in writing, I would be wary of using this route- you may be messed about.
3. Ring an Accident management Company. You can simply Google the term,to find out how they work & what they do. Basically, they will claim off the other insurer for you, arrange repairs, and supply a courtesy car- which you will keep until I either yours is fixed, or until you have been paid out (if it is not worth repairing). You will not pay any policy excess nor fees.
In all three cases, you will need to inform your insurer- they will know anyway, & can be difficult in the future, if you fail to tell them
I hope this helps.0 -
You can get details of the third party insurer from the askmid website.
(Use a smartphone to get the details foc)
Then you can claim off the insurer rather than using your own0 -
I had a door damaged during a windscreen repair at the companies workshop. They wanted to arrange the repairs and not go via their insurers .
We had 4 weeks of "I'm sorting it " , "just waiting for someone to get back to me " and non returned calls before I gave up and told my insurers to go ahead anyway .
Your insurers need to know in case you change your mindEx forum ambassador

The free askmid check for owners tells you the car is insured but not the insurer details. If you take the £4 other driver option does it give you the insurer details then?0 -
If you use a smartphone to get other party insurance details as advised in #26 it's then FOC!
If you pay using laptop then add the £4 onto your uninsured losses to get reimbursed by the liable third party0 -
Hi, just to let you all know that contacting my insurance company and letting them handle everyting is such a weight of my mind .They were able confirm the other driver is insured and that I will not have to pay any excess. Within an hour of speaking to them my car was booked in at their accident repair centre and the coutesy car is arranged. I sent a text to advise the other driver to contact his insurance company and he seemed to be ok with it. So thanks again for everyone's advice, it has really helped to have someone to talk to about it.0

Hi Charise,
I'm in a similar situation. I young female driver hit my car from behind and shunted my into the car at the front one evening 2 weeks ago.
The scenario was that I'd driven through traffic lights with the flow of the traffic, uphead of us were roadworks and all the traffic slowed down except the female driver who wasn't paying attention to the situation and crashed into the back of my car at speed and shunted my car into the next driver, a taxi driver.
Needless to say the young female driver was extremely apologetic and admitted fault. I had my adult daughter with me and she took plenty of photos and all of us exchanged details. Because the car was driveable, I drove home, I received a text message from the young lady asking if I was ok. Unfortunately, I had a huge headache and took some paracetamol and went to bed.
The next morning, I phoned my insurance to inform them I'd had an accident which I think is a legal requirement and the accident was logged and closed.
The young lady's insurers phoned and stated that I will have a courtesy car (I'm fully comp with legal services) however, my car is also old and I have had it from new 15years ago. It has been kept serviced and in really good condition until the accident. But the young lady's insurers wanted to take the car away and write it off as the car was old and not worth repairing or so I was told by her insurers.
However, the lady's insurers wanted to write off my car to which I said that I want my car repaired and I will be taking it to a garage of my choice where it will be assessed and they will pay for the repairs. The man I spoke to was adamant that they will not pay for the repairs if it exceeds the car's worth. However, I pointed out that it is my right to have the car repaired. I also had significant whiplash, and experienced numbness to the side of my face - have to explain I had previous neurosurgery years ago. I also have a report from my GP stating that I have significant whiplash and I still get headaches during the course of my work which has happened since the accident.
Well that's my sorry tale Charise but you don't have to go through your insurance to get your car repaired but you do have to inform them of the accident asap. Hope your car will be repaired as soon, just hope the young man will come good.
