Free AV & Firewall

I understand you cannot have two AV at the same time. Any idea how do I disable my pc-cillin as I do want to remove it completely. I intend to buy an updated version 2008 later on. In the meantime, I want a free AV & Fireall to tie me up for a couple of months. A friend recommends comodo, any one is using it, you can have the antivirus & firewall as well. I am also wondering if you can get free av & firewall, why is it people still buy them, are the free ones not very good? Thanks

If you are running xp then open the control panel and click on addor remove programs, you should find pc-cillin there, click remove and follow instructions.
I'd also clear up any redundant registry entries afterwards with ccleaner.
I use AVG free antivirus on my laptop, you could also use zonealarm free firewall.
The free ones sometimes get better reviews that those you pay for like norton, mcaffee etc.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Norton and mcaffee have both got reputations for wanting to take over your pc and are disliked by many, yet people still pay for them. I guess it's a case of "the man at pc w**** told me to".
  • Comodo as a free fire wall is a good choice as for anti virus any of these free ones are good - AVG, AVAST, ANTIVIR

COMODO also provide a free anti-virus package here.

For info this is still at the beta stage.

As with all beta software use caution.

I am just wondering whether I could disable pc-cillin without actually remove the program. I know I have done it before by just removing the tick but cannot remember how. Thanks for your help, I will use comodo firewall & AVG for antivirus unless I could get a cheap pc-cillin on ebay?
  • You should have a PC-cillin logo in your taskbar (bottom corner of screen next to the clock. You might have to click the little arrow to see all logos.)

Right-click on this and you should be able to disable it from there.

I suppose the reason many people pay for antivirus software is because of the common assumption that anything more expensive is better - if you've looked around this site long enough you'll see that that's not true in many cases. Programs like McAfee, Norton, etc, are owned by big companies which do deals with respected companies like like PC World, BT, etc, who in turn get money from encouraging you to buy the software, whereas if PC World employees started reccommending the free software, they wouldn't be making money from it.

And remember some people do just have an automatic distrust of anything free! Personally I've been using AVG for about a year and a half now (reccommended by my local PC repair shop who say Norton creates more problems than it's worth) and wouldn't go back for anything. Why pay, unless you're a company with sensitive data that needs serious protection?
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right

Unless pc-cillin does something weird then there's no problem removing your existing one, installing a free one then installing the 2008 version later

Internet: to download directly (easiest and no reason not to do this unless you have not immediate internet connection)

Folder: saving the latest definition files yourself manually and then installing them, a lot of work unless you absolutely can't do the Internet option.
