John Lewis Returns Policy

Hi,
I'm trying to find out about John Lewis returns policy for an iPad. Their policy (according to their website) is items can be returned for up to 35 days.

My dad is not sure if he will get on with it, so he wanted to use it and if it's no good return it under their 35 day returns policy.
When he went to buy one, the store said they would not take it back due to the data protection act.

I phoned customer enquiries at JL to check this. They said it was down to the actual store. This seems odd to have a policy that does not cover the whole country.
The data protection act claim does not sound right as you can factory reset the device.

Has anybody tried to return an item like this to John Lewis?

Thanks.

If you've checked the return policy, that means you also saw the bit that said...
we'd expect this to mean that you've kept packaging and labels, and that the item is unused and undamaged

Which means he couldn't do what you say below.

John Lewis have iPads on display in store - they are there so you can try them out before purchase.

I do not know any shop where you can buy try it out and then return it because you didnt get on with it ?? Who would then buy a £400 ipad that had been used. Best suggestion would be try in store first or spend less money and buy second hand

If you were to by in online from John Lewis then there is no reason why the Ipad couldn't be tested at home and if not suitable, returned for a full refund. (provided that this testing doesn't go beyond what you would normally be allowed to do when testing a device in a store)

And you'd only have 14 days to do so, not the 35 as posted earlier.

You still have 35 days to test and return the goods as this is the John Lewis return policy and as this is stated in their T&c's, it forms part of the contract of sale.
•If you've changed your mind about keeping your purchase, please return it in its original condition with proof of purchase and we'll exchange or refund it
•Unless faulty, this should be within 35 days of purchase
•We're unable to accept returns at John Lewis Heathrow
•Ordinarily if you have your receipt or delivery note we'll refund the original debit, credit or charge card used to purchase. This includes items you've purchased in Clearance or Price Match events

•Please return any unwanted item, unless faulty, in its original condition. We'd expect this to mean that:

    - you've kept all original packaging and labels

    - it's undamaged and unused (excludes normal examination of the product as you might do in store)

Are you allowed to go in, unseal brand new ones and start using them?

I though that's why they had demonstration models set up?

Costco have a superb 90 day unconditional returns policy on electronics. It used to be lifetime but people abused it. They do have a lifetime satisfaction guarantee on their other products though.

There is nothing in the Consumer Contracts regulations that states or even implies that this is correct and items with internal storage don't normally fall into any of the exempted categories.

If this was true, computers, tablets, digital cameras. mobile phones, sat navs, mp3 players, TV and satellite recorders, dash cameras and probably many other items couldn't legally be returned under the CCR right of cancellation, something that clearly isn't the case.
