Will I have to cover the fees n case of chargeback? Confused

First time in.the forums :)
Sometime ago, my boyfriend booked for me a stay in a fancy hotel abroad for my birthday. And a few days ago, we argued really badly and in ended up in a break up. He said he will file a chargeback with his credit card company to get back the money hotel booking (it was an advance purchase rate, his card already got charged). Im already in said country and my check in date in within a few days, however this situation makes me a little bit nervous, if the chargeback comes through while Im staying at the hotel, will I be asked to cover the room fees from my own pocket...?
I know I will have to give my own card at check in for preathorisation to cover any incidentals (mini bar etc ), which Im happy to comply with, however I wanna be sure they will not charge it with room fees in case of chargeback from my boyfriend’s card originally used for payment.

This is a big and reputable hotel chain and my fears may be unfounded, just not entirely sure how all this system works...

Thanks for any help!

If his chargeback is successful, then the booking will be cancelled. You will need to make your own booking and arrangement payment.

However, it seems unlikely he will be successful, as he had no basis for the chargeback.
  • Apparently credit card companies like to take the side of the customer, so you never know...
Im fine with canceled booking if it happens before I check in, then I will just go to another much cheaper place, what I worry about is ,when Im already there, in the room and it comes through, will I be made pay for the nights I already stayed...?

No. They're neutral. They may process the chargeback, but the hotel's evidence will then have it reversed.

Technically, they will want payment from whoever made the booking. In practical terms, they will ask you for payment.
  • Really? Makes me nervous to go and check in there at all...

Perhaps I’m missing something but I don’t see how the chargeback could possibly be successful once you’ve checked in.
  • You!!!8217;re not missing anything, it!!!8217;s just my ignorance when it comes to criteria for successful chargebacks :) Im not really sure what story my ex boyfriend might come up with, say I used his card without consent or something...getting a bit paranoid there

Chargeback is intended for fraud etc not because he's changed his mind. If, let's pretend, his card was used fraudulently then he will need to report it to the police and name you as the criminal else they will just assume he's making it up

In the real world they will do the chargeback, hotel will explain there was nothing wrong with the order and get the money back (in which case you might as well stay) - but the hotel will likely charge your card if he does the chargeback while you are staying there meaning a fuss for you as well. I'd stay somewhere else and let him stay there if he wishes

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • Why wouldn!!!8217;t you just transfer him the money if you are going to use the hotel?

Most hotels I!!!8217;ve paid for at reception, including ones pre paid.
  • It feels like you want to defraud the hotel or you are going to use the hotel without the boyfriends consent.

    What!!!8217;s the real story here?
  • Thanks for clarification. I doubt he!!!8217;d take it to the extent of filing a police report, hopefully :)

Good thing is, these are very recent developments between us, and as far as I know it takes at least a month to process a chargeback, especially that it is international...? By which time I will already have left the premises :)
