  • I'm old, experienced and old fashioned enough to know that people can make what is available into something good and worthwhile if they have the motivation and determination to do so. There have been times in my life when I had precious little, no slack in the system and had to make do on what I had and finding the odd half crown dropped in the street was absolute treasure trove. It meant I could eat for a while. It's hard to be strong and find ways of surviving and I guess much easier to wail and cry and expect outside agencies to fix things and make it all go away which seems almost an expectation these days. I didn't and don't now expect my life to be a clone of everyone else's nor do I expect to have a life of ease and luxury, we have enough and know how to make 5p do the work of 10p and I KNOW that life is worth working for and hard work and inventiveness bring rewards and self respect. It can be done by everyone in or out of the EU! we need to believe in ourselves and our resilience and abilities and our capacity to work for ourselves and we'll be in a much more positive place whatever happens.

True words, Primrose. We should all focus on our own lives and those near to us, and let the politicians sort it out. I am sure we won't be happy, whatever they do!

One thing I would like to see is people stopping using terms like Leavers, Remainers, Brexiteers, Remoaners. etc. For goodness sake, the referendum was over three years ago, people using those terms just perpetuate the arguments and the discord. They need to drag their heads out of 2016 and into the present day, instead of behaving like kids in a school playground.

Of course we are in unknown territory, and there have been assumptions flying around about what effects we will see on our lives once we leave the EU. The unknown is always worrying, but things will work out as they will without us fighting and squabbling. Let the politicians get on with that (they act like a bunch of spoilt brats anyway) and let the rest of us get on with our lives. If that means stocking up on food and household items, or renewing passports early, or even making plans to go and live elsewhere because of work reasons, then so be it. We must do what is right for ourselves and our families.

I think the rifts run very deep. Whatever happens on 31st October, that won't change until another major event comes along to replace it, or indeed things turn out very much on the rosy side.

I agree, Nargleblast, it's unhelpful to use labels for people, that only serves to reinforce the divisions.

Today is stash labelling, dating and repacking day! Having heard of one poor soul with a weevil infestation, I decided that prevention is better than cure and am going to be storing all rice, flours, pasta, tea etc in solid plastic tubs so the little blighters can't chew in or out. I found this useful guide for weevil prevention. I'm going with the fresh bayleaf and eucalyptus oil suggestions, even if they are fairy tales they'll smell terrific!

For those about to prep - check your kitchen tools are sharp, where needed.

Malt vinegar is a great green algae killer, the sort you get on paths due to damp and lack of sunlight. Dilute and squirt on, but be careful not to get any on your plants. Works a treat!
  • I wonder if the people pf Britain will ever be the same again after the rift caused by the referendum. Will this ever resolve itself and make us one nation again or will we forever after be 'them' and 'us' depending on what happens on the 31st October. If we do leave the EU will there be legal action taken by people who wanted to stay or if we don't leave will there be protests and unrest from those who wanted to leave. It's such a sadness as I rather like my fellow humans and there must be half of the population who will be most unhappy whatever happens. A sadness that there can be no happy endings no matter what happens.

Well said - unfortunately very true. :(

I was reminded that I own a food slicer. I had quite forgotten and thought of it as being an accessory of my meat-eating past, so today I sliced hundreds of thin slices of courgette for dehydrated crisps and it worked very well. It will also cut them, and aubergine, lengthwise for use in lasagne-type dishes. I wonder what else is in my garage?

I like to see what we're [STRIKE]accused of[/STRIKE] up to, but this made me laugh aloud

Go on - who's bought a New Car?

And out of curiosity, do you think only 50% have stockpiled medicines? I tend to keep a rolling stash of paracetamol but added to the medicine chest with bottles of cough mixture, multivite, soluble aspirin & a book on growing your own drugs.

Husband is very robust about his insulin but it has a best before of 2022 whereas us epileptics are on counted numbers of pills - dashed tricky to stockpile without fraud & of course we're on different meds.

Stockpiling prescription drugs won't work for me as i get 2 weeks supply at a time. I am either ordering a repeat waiting for the chemist to get it in or queueing in the chemist. And don't get me started on hrt.As for stockpiling groceries I have always had a good supply of everything i use regularly including toilet roll( good loft insulation)

This article from the evening standard is rather frivolous but does contain a rather disturbing paragraph

    https://www.standard.co.uk/comment/comment/french-husbands-seville-oranges-and-hawaiian-pizza-stockpiling-for-brexit-has-taken-a-surreal-turn-a4211261.html

    I QUOTE
Elsewhere last week, a professor of food policy warned that, in the event of no-deal, the UK food supply faces levels of disruption that are “unprecedented” in peacetime, and that fresh fruit and vegetables, in particular, could run short. Thrilling if you’re a seven-year-old boy; less so for everyone else. Meanwhile, a friend tells me she’s been stocking up on insulin pens for her diabetic mother since six local GPs in south London have already run out.
    END QUOTE
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.
