The basics Jenny
Tea in your preferred state (bags, loose etc.)
Coffee again ground or instant, what will make you feel happy
tinned fruit and veg, meat and fish too
dried milk
sugar/sweetener of choice/honey
flour, baking powder, dried yeast
oils for cooking (you can make pastry and cakes with oil)
Things to spread on bread like jam, jars of pate, long life cheese triangles, peanut butter, paste, marmite etc., chocolate spread, personal for me the lotus biscuit spread!!!
porridge oats, rice, pasta
herbs spices flavourings,
pasta sauces, Chinese/curry sauces/packets of sauce to cheer up stir frys
dried fruits and nuts
tins of ghee if you want a buttery taste
crispbreads because they keep forever
lentils because they cook fast and don't need soaking
Chocolate!
I'm sure the many other things that folks would consider necessities but think of it as a prolonged camping trip and cater for the number of folks dependent on it don't buy for the whole world.
Bottled water or stored tap water might not be a bad idea either.0 -
Good basic list Mrs LW I already keep most of those in, but a good guide for anybody just starting out, and if one or two items bought a week will soon mount up. I'm sure others will add to the list.
Thank you."When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us" Alexander Graham Bell0 -
tbh, I am going to start prepping again, as soon as I have settled into my new home. I never was a `leave it to chance and crossed fingers` type of person. I take my own and family welfare seriously and am very independent, never relying on anyone to drop supplies by helicopter. It will be what it will be, us plebs and peasants can do nothing except to prepare for the worst case scenario. The old saying `prepare for the worst and hope for the best`0

That's the truth Kittie, when the chips are down, you are usually on your own at least until whatever help is available can get to you so it's only sense to have a couple of weeks worth of basic supplies to hand of everyday normal things that will store for a while undamaged. Not because the end of the world is nigh BUT because the utilities companies have unstable infrastructures at the best of times and no gas, electricity or water is mighty inconvenient if it's for days at a time. Better by far to have your basics and camping type equipment to see you through!0

Should be having a second hand breadmaker delivered soon (this is a deprived area, so they don't tend to show up on Free cycle, as people here don't get married /have them on wedding lists before losing interest after the first load).
This is good on two levels - the most important being that I dislike white sliced intensely and can't afford to replace the dodgy thermostat on the oven after getting the freezer and replacing the kettle when it went poouff last week (the whistling one has inexplicably been tidied away /lost from the cupboard it has lived in since the day I moved in 8 years ago) - has the second is that when the shelves are empty of bread, whether through panic buying or a failure of distribution /imports /etc, we have bread. And cake.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Some more basics to add to the list above are
Cuppa Soups
All in one hot chocolate drinks
instant mash
stock cubes
packets of sauce mixes
packets of dried soup
cordials for drinks and squash if you use it
instant gravy granules (gravy turns a dull meat edible)
We don't mind the Soya Protein mixes that Batchelors make and they come in a Bolognese and Shepherds pie flavour, the latter one can be turned into a chilli or a curry very easily as it's just a savoury mince flavour. They keep for ages and are very nutritious but not everyone likes the idea of soya do they?0 -
I'm buying one extra tin or packet every time I go to the supermarket. If there are no shortages after Brexit I'll just use them up. Yesterday I sorted out a spare shelf in the garage for the tins and have found some empty biscuit/cake tins to store packets-don't want to do all this prepping only to find that mice have attacked my stores.0

I've been unable to get loose leaf Darjeeling tea in Waitrose, M&S or Tescos. Things like that concentrate the mind!
What other things would people miss?0 -
I don't think I'd actually miss much because we make most things in some form or another right here in the UK. I think the biggest change would be seasonal food rather than having all things available for 365 days of the year but for us that would actually be a good thing. I'm not sure the tea shortage is due to anything European though but possibly due to very bad weather disrupting growing seasons in those countries where it is traditionally grown.0

I'm thinking that with this wonderful summer, which seems to be the same in Europe as well, things like tins of tomatoes should be cheap to stock up on later this year. They seem to be back around the 31p mark in Lidl but they have been more expensive a year or so ago so if they are on offer come the autumn I will stock upIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
