+1 for what has been said about considering selling and getting a cheaper car, this will be the cheapest option.
However if you are going to stick with what you have got then have a look at your finance documents and see what they say about overpayment. Put simply the more you are able to pay off the less interest will be added.
Out of interest what car did you get?0 -
Gentleman, let's not turn this into a discussion about Almeras. The point I am making is that you don't need to spend £10k to get a reliable car.0

Which is what I said in post #3
I do not like Almeras that much, although they are reasonably reliable, the only experience I had was been driven around on the occasion by the ex-in laws. They had a gen 1, the gen 2's that came out in 2000 differed from its predecessor with smooth, curved lines. Some still thought it bland in comparison with its rivals although the Almera was selling strongly worldwide and got a facelift in 2003.... i could go on quoting wiki but the man said lets not turn this into a decision about Almera and I need to get back to work.

Plenty of these about on starship mileage without issues, and cheap.
For a budget of £500-£1000 the OP has plenty of choice of reliable cars without rust.
Just avoid anything made by Vauxhall.0 -

Mate has a 2005 Astra van (estate without windows). Knocking on 250,000 miles and running just fine. The Vectra it replaced was nearing 300,000 miles.
Pretty much every car made in the last 30 years is capable of hundreds of thousands of miles and not let you down if you service them properly and fix things when they break or you get told they're going to, such as being told when its serviced there's play in track rod ends and fixing it instead of leaving it to the MOT.
On the Car Throttle Channel on Youtube he recently bought a V reg Skoda Octavia with 432,000 miles on the clock. It had been regularly serviced, here's what the state of the engine was when they took it apart:

He since took it to the Nurburgring in Germany and back in a single day, a round trip of 830 miles which it did on a single tank of fuel, including a lap of the track, without any issue. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Don't buy that almera. The eml is on, and the clutch is gone.
A clutch is easy enough, but I looked for an almera a while ago, and there were a few around with the eml on cheap at front drive traders. Conclusion- It ain't an easy/cheap fix or they would have done it.
that was one of the problems we had with ours. EML on all the time and spent too much money trying to find out what the problem was. Ended up trading it in for a 307 which we had far fewer problems with - in fact no problems at all.0
